Yorkshire: what are the different types of Yorkshire?

Everyone’s crazy about Yorkies, the cute animals to which we’ve given this nickname.

They’re adorable little dogs that no one can resist, and they have so many advantages, such as being easy to train, that most people love them.

By the end of this article, you’ll know just about everything there is to know about the Yorkshire.

The history of the Yorkshire
As its name suggests, the Yorkshire comes directly from Yorkshire, England, and is a cross between two breeds: the Bichon Maltese and the Cairn Terrier.

At the beginning of its existence, its main function was to hunt vermin and rabbits, so it was very useful. Today, Yorkshire Terriers can be found just about anywhere in the world, they are easily adopted as pets and are frequently entered in all kinds of dog shows.

There are Yorkies with a steel-blue coat along the flanks and fawn on the head and chest, and these are the ones most often accepted in dog shows.

What does he look like?
Physically, he’s a small dog with long hair. He moves with elegance, being well supported. But it’s the beauty of his coat that makes him so distinctive.

With a flat skull and small, articulated teeth, he’s very discreet. His eyes are dark and quite small, topped by little ears in the shape of the letter V, which are always pointed at the top of his tiny head.

He has :

A weight of 3.1kg;
A height of 20cm;
Long hair, especially in certain areas like the head.
The Yorkshire, a dog with character!
Don’t be fooled by its small size, because the Yorkshire hides a very special character. Known to be extremely stubborn, he remains more or less faithful to his appearance. Affectionate and very attached to his owner, he needs to be well looked after: don’t leave him at home, take him out for walks at least twice a day.

It would be preferable not to have rodents, as these two animals don’t get along very well. In fact, Yorkies have hunting instincts due to their origins, so they’ll often go after your rodent if you have one.

Who is the Yorkshire designed for?
The Yorkshire is a pet for all ages, perfect for everyone, even the youngest. So it’s just as suitable for an owner who loves sport as it is for someone who’s more the couch potato at home, but you do need to bear in mind that you’ll need to take it out a minimum number of times a day.

He’s certainly very affectionate, so he’ll constantly need your gratitude, which can even make him sad when you don’t show it, so you mustn’t ignore him under any circumstances.

However, you must not give in to his every whim!
